Taking pictures at skating events can be fun…
But not necessarily so. I made the experience that skating is the most difficult sport to photograph. But why? First of all, it’s an indoor sport. Everything with natural daylight is easier to photograph. The lighting at skating rinks is often quite bad (unlike at modern event venues). Here in Oberstdorf, for example, the afternoon competitions have better lighting than the evening competitions – in case the sun is shining. Skaters are also moving much faster than rhythmic gymmnasts or ballroom dancers and that’s why it’s much harder to take well-focused pictures of skaters where all body parts are visible. Dancers and pairs are even worse because you have two people to photograph. And then there is the problem with boring poses I mentioned in my post about the men SP and LP (click here). But there are also skaters who are really easy on the eye and therefore very photogenic. The most photogenic one in Oberstdorf: definitely Morgan Cipres. And that’s why I decided to do an „Ode to Cipres“ as final part of my Nebelhorn posts.
I hope you enjoyed my posts about 2015 Nebelhorn Trophy in Oberstdorf. There is one more post to come with landscape pictures. I loved Oberstdorf as always and I can’t wait to go back.
