|Sportsgeist| 2016 Nebelhorn Tropy – pairs short program

After all those years, pairs are still my favorite discipline and I was really looking forward to this part of the competition.

Ioulia Chtchetinina

First to skate were Ioulia Chtchetinina (what a name…) & Noah Scherer from Switzerland. Their music was really strange and they had an overall weak skate.

Minerva Fabienne Hase & Nolan Seegert

It was not the first time I’ve seen Hase & Seegert but, unfortunately, it doesn’t look like they are improving. At least in this short program.

Ashley Cain & Timothy Leduc

Ashley Cain & Timothy Leduc were the nicest surprise of the whole event. They’ve only started skating together in July but they already look fabulous together. She’s very outgoing, with a typical American smile and he just matches her perfectly. One can only hope they will stick together longer than your average US pair… They could have a bright future together.

Aliona Savchenko & Bruno Massot

Aliona Savchenko

I loved Aliona Savchenko & Bruno Massot’s new short program. It’s very entertaining and they are showing off some great new tricks. Their 3 twist is so much higher than Savchenko & Szolkowy’s. She doubled her SBS 3 sal but landed her most prestigious element, the thrown 3 axel. I’ve got the impression that this element is very important for her, at least according to her biography which I recently read. Bruno Massot is not the most elegant skater and doesn’t have the best posture but still, they manage to look very good together and Aliona definitely seems to be so much happier.

Nicolas Roulet

Alexandra Herbrikova & Nicolas Roulet from Switzerland had a cute short program to music from „Grease“. Unfortunately, their elements did not work out. I loved his skates and kept on wondering if those tattoos he was showing off are real…

Liubov Ilyushechkina

Liubov Ilyushechkina & Dylan Moscovitch

I have a big soft spot for Liubov Ilyushechkina & Dylan Moscovitch (especially her). They are so fast! They have a very dramatic short program music.

Erika Smith & AJ Reiss

Erika Smith & AJ Reiss, the second American pairs team, had their own fan team with them (wearing caps with their names on them).

Mari Vartmann & Ruben Blommaert

Mari Vartmann & Ruben Blommaert’s skated to music by Michael Jackson and their costume contained the one thing which seems to be mandatory for a Michael Jackson program: gloves. They had a solid performance and I like this program but fear it’s too loud for the average (older) spectator in Oberstdorf 😉
